History

From the ancient migration legends to Krasnaya Sloboda, the 1888 study and the great emigration of the 1990s.

The ancestors of the Mountain Jews came from Persia and settled in the Caucasus — in the mountain villages of Dagestan and Shirvan — long before written records.

In 1742 the settlement of Krasnaya Sloboda (Qırmızı Qəsəbə) was founded across the river from Quba, and it became the main centre of Jewish life in Azerbaijan.

In 1888 Ilya Anisimov published the first systematic study of the community. In the 1990s most families moved to Israel, Russia, the United States and Europe — and keep the memory of the villages they came from.
